About the Plane Wreck & Eyvindarholt Area
The airplane wreck and the surrounding land are part of Eyvindarholt, a family-owned farm that has been our home for generations. This land is not a commercial attraction created overnight, but a place shaped slowly by nature, time, and the people who grew up here.
We were raised nearby in Skógar, beneath the mountains and glaciers of South Iceland. For more than 40 years, this landscape has been our playground, our classroom, and our refuge. We learned its moods, its paths, and its silence long before visitors began to arrive. Sharing it now feels natural, almost inevitable.
The airplane wreck rests quietly on our land, surrounded by open space, changing light, and wide skies. It is a reminder of the stories hidden across Iceland’s landscape, not fenced off or polished, but left to weather naturally with the land around it. We have chosen to keep this place simple and respectful, allowing visitors to experience it as part of the greater surroundings, not as a staged attraction.
Horses are an essential part of life at Eyvindarholt. They roam the fields near the wreck and the farm, calm and curious, just as they always have. These horses are not here for show. They are part of our everyday life, and we ask visitors to treat them with the same respect and care we do.
Eyvindarholt itself was purchased by our family in the autumn of 2019, and since then we have carefully restored the old farm buildings with the help of friends and neighbors. What began as a working farm has slowly become a welcoming place for guests who value nature, quiet moments, and authenticity. From the hilltop houses and cabins, the views stretch across mountains, glaciers, rivers, and volcanoes, changing with the seasons and the light.
This is a peaceful place. In winter, the northern lights often dance above the fields. In summer, the long daylight invites slow walks and short hikes on our private land toward the surrounding hills. The location makes it easy to explore South Iceland, yet many guests find that the greatest luxury is simply staying still.
We are locals. We live here, we raise our families here, and we know this area intimately. Hosting guests is not a business concept for us, but a continuation of a long relationship with this land. Our wish is simple: that those who visit leave with a deeper sense of connection, calm, and respect for this place we are proud to call home.
Warm regards,
Tómas Birgir Magnússon and family
